About Us

When was the last time your feet felt like a million bucks? If you can’t remember, visit Mike Smith at his shoeshine chair. Smith has been shining shoes since he was 13-year-old youth in his hometown of Hernando, Mississippi. There he learned the trade from a shoe cobbler, who gave him his first paying job. The next thing I know, I sort of perfected the craft of shining shoes.

These days Smith is retired, having spent 33 years in the K-12 education arena. He moved from his beloved Southland, where he also played saxophone in various blues bands up and down the Mississippi Delta, and Memphis, TN.

Mike met his” twin flame”, Margaret aka Maggie, a fifth generation Nevadan while attending an educational conference in Denver, CO. In 2018 they were happily married where they make Carson City their place of residence.

Shoe shining is more about the connection with customers than simply just polishing their shoes to a gleam. My form of social media is conversation, having a natural conversation with another individual, you just can’t beat this, you build relationships…that’s what it’s all about.

You can establish a great clientele if you offer a service, and if they like it, believe me they’ll come back to see you. They’ll refer and tell their friends about it, too. I love shining boots, shoes, and cleaning saddles because I make people smile and happy.

Small Leather Goods – $100

For smaller leather accessories, including:

" I met Mr. Mike Smith, owner of Shiny Soles, at a cutting horse show being held at the Reno Sparks Livestock Center. I noticed he had quite a few people coming up to get boots shined throughout the show. On the second to last day of the show I saw a saddle up there and boy did it look nice! I asked him if I could bring a saddle up for some TLC. My saddle was really dirty, many miles in the weather. With all his hard work he was able to get it looking new again. I was most impressed with how he said, he would have it done by 4 or 4:30 pm and he was right on schedule, staying a half hour later at the show just to finish it when he said he would. I was so happy with that one saddle that I asked if he would travel within a reasonable distance. I live roughly 2 hours from Reno and operate a big cutting horse training program. We have quite a few saddles onsite and I wanted to have all of ours done before we hit our fall cutting horse futurity run. We made last minute plans for him to come over the hill to do as many saddles as I could rally up over the weekend. He set up under our main barn, had all the saddles out and ready to go.
